Scientists Find A Massive, Ancient Lake Under The Gulf Of Mexico — And Nothing Has Come Out Alive

It sounds like something out of science fiction, but scientists exploring the depths of the Gulf of Mexico have actually discovered an underwater lake — with its own current.

Brine pools like these are nothing new, but what makes this one so special is that it’s deadly to nearly everything that gets swept into its salty grasp. They’re calling it the Jacuzzi of Despair, and for good reason…

This particular brine pool is nearly five times as salty as the water surrounding it, and it contains highly toxic concentrations of methane and hydrogen sulfide. Only the most hardy critters can swim into this lake and live to tell the tale!
